Beech Class are Exploring Colours, Nature and Feelings Through Play

Recently, the children in Beech Class have been enjoying the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This popular book has helped them learn about colours, and some children can even predict which coloured animal appears next in the story. This activity supports early literacy and language development while reinforcing colour recognition.

The changing seasons have sparked curiosity among the children, particularly as leaves fall from the trees. They have been collecting leaves, observing their colours and sizes, and even helping to sweep them up. To build on this interest, the nursery introduced a song about falling leaves, which encourages counting and understanding the concept of ‘one less’—a key mathematical skill in the EYFS.

Outdoor play has also been a focus. Children have been using crates creatively, turning them into campfires and beds, and building structures to walk and balance on. These activities promote physical development, problem-solving and imaginative play.

Inside the classroom, feelings hand puppets have been a popular resource. Children are learning to identify different emotions and copy facial expressions, supporting their personal, social and emotional development.

The playdough area continues to be a favourite. Children help make the playdough and use rolling pins and cutters to create shapes, worms and snakes. This hands-on activity strengthens fine motor skills and creativity. For families interested in making playdough at home, the nursery has displayed a recipe in the 2s corridor.
