The children in Elm Room have been captivated by their exploration of The Very Hungry Caterpillar story, using it as a wonderful opportunity to develop their counting skills as they followed the caterpillar’s journey through different fruits.
The excitement reached new heights when the children witnessed the incredible transformation of real caterpillars as they changed into chrysalises and then emerged as beautiful butterflies. Four butterflies were carefully cared for and treated to some fresh oranges before their release. The children spent time observing the intricate patterns on the butterflies’ wings, developing their observation skills and attention to detail before watching them fly away.
This hands-on experience with nature has been perfectly complemented by food exploration activities, where the children have been busy chopping and tasting a variety of fruits and vegetables. This practical activity supports their understanding of healthy eating whilst developing their fine motor skills.
The learning has extended into gardening, where the children planted sunflowers and have been taking responsibility for their care. They’ve been diligently watering their plants and observing their growth, which beautifully supports the EYFS area of Understanding the World as they learn about growth, change and the natural environment.
What a fantastic way to bring learning to life through real experiences and discovery!
