Getting Back to Nature: Exploring Natural Resources in Fir Class

by | Feb 27, 2026 | Fir Room, News from the Rooms

Children in Fir Class at St Philip’s Marsh Nursery School have been getting wonderfully hands-on with the natural world, exploring what nature has to offer both inside and out.

Outside, children have been investigating puddles and mud, scooping, pouring and examining what they find, which is brilliant for early scientific thinking and understanding of the world. That curiosity has continued indoors too, where herbs, flowers and water have been laid out for children to explore, mix and experiment with, creating their own wonderful concoctions. There has also been some beautiful mud painting outdoors, with children using the natural environment itself as their medium.

A pumpkin has sparked some fantastic hands-on exploration too, with children pressing, poking and decorating it with colourful pegs, developing their fine motor skills and sensory awareness as they go.

All of these experiences help children connect with the natural world in a meaningful way, nurturing curiosity, creativity and a love of the outdoors that we hope stays with them for life.
