Fir Class Explores Nature Through Gardening and Mini Beast Investigations

by | May 23, 2025 | Fir Room, News from the Rooms

The children in Fir class have been deeply engaged in hands-on gardening experiences this term, developing their understanding of plant growth and life cycles. They have enthusiastically planted seeds, tended to their garden plots, and celebrated the successful harvest of radishes that they planted earlier in the term. The excitement was palpable as children carefully washed their freshly picked radishes before cutting and tasting them, creating meaningful connections between their growing efforts and the food they eat. These gardening activities support the EYFS areas of Understanding the World and Personal, Social and Emotional Development, as children learn about the natural world while developing responsibility and patience through caring for living things.

Alongside their gardening adventures, the children have developed a keen interest in mini beasts, spending time observing and investigating the snails they discovered in their outdoor environment. Their curiosity extended beyond observation as they used their creativity and problem-solving skills to construct their own bugs using loose parts and natural materials. These investigations support the EYFS areas of Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design, encouraging children to explore, experiment, and express their understanding of the natural world around them. Through both gardening and mini beast exploration, the children are building essential scientific thinking skills while developing a deep appreciation for nature and their role as environmental stewards.
