Fir Class has been exploring various mark-making examples this week, experimenting with a range of different media from paint to chalk, and even mud and water! This diverse exploration helps children understand that marks can be made in many ways, whilst they discover the unique properties of each material.
The children have been engaged in both fine-motor small-scale mark-making and large-scale gross-motor activities, developing different physical skills through varied approaches. Small-scale work builds the precise hand control needed for future writing, whilst large-scale mark-making develops shoulder and arm strength through sweeping movements and broad strokes.
These varied mark-making experiences lay essential foundations for literacy whilst encouraging creativity and experimentation across different scales and materials.
