St Philip’s Marsh Oak Class Explores Mathematics

by | Nov 25, 2025 | News from the Rooms, Oak Room

The children in Oak Class have been exploring different elements of mathematics through engaging hands-on activities. There has been a sustained interest in completing different types of puzzles, from inset puzzles to more complex ones where the children have to match a numeral with a quantity of objects, developing their number recognition and understanding of one-to-one correspondence. Some children created a snake puzzle, using their knowledge of the alphabet to help figure out which piece came next, applying their literacy skills to problem-solving.

At the light table, the magnetic tiles are being used to create complex structures, as well as two-dimensional patterns, exploring shape, symmetry, and spatial relationships through construction and design. Following this, we have made repeating patterns with unifix cubes whilst some children chose to explore this in a different way, such as making tall towers or counting the blocks, showing how children can take learning in their own direction based on their interests.

We have started “number of the week” at group time, and there has been an interest in ordering numerals, building understanding of number sequence and the relationship between numbers whilst developing mathematical confidence through focused exploration.
